Why Is Detox Necessary?

Individuals in active drug or alcohol addiction often try to quit cold turkey before seeking professional help. Unfortunately, the discomfort of withdrawal symptoms can make them physically ill and increase the risk of continued substance abuse. Detox can also make a difference in preventing and reducing relapse.

This includes individuals with co-occurring mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. After detox, we will connect you with a long-term recovery program to focus on the underlying mental health challenges that drive your substance abuse.

Attempting to detox on your own is admirable, but it can be dangerous. We’re here to support and guide you towards a life focused on healing and health. Speak with one of our admissions specialists today.

How Long Are Detox Programs in California?

California has no structured regimen of how long a detox program will last. At Restorations Health Care, you will enter detox, and after can be moved to a long-term program such as residential treatment. The length of time needed to fully detox from all drugs and alcohol from the body varies, but on average, detox programs last three to seven days.

The length of detox depends on several factors including the length of substance abuse, frequency of use, substance of choice, and if any co-occurring health conditions are present.

Detox programs in Anaheim: what to expect

Our medically supervised detox occurs in three stages: evaluation, stabilization, and preparation. During the evaluation process, you will undergo an interview and medical examination to determine the best treatment course. At this time, our medical team will also identify any mental or physical health concerns.

Stabilization is the second key part of the detox process. During this stage, you will stop using your substance of choice and receive medication assistance to overcome withdrawal symptoms or cravings. Ultimately, we want you to have a sustainable and substance-free life. So, you will receive information on the steps needed to secure long-term sobriety or drug-free living. Your friends and family can take part in this stage for moral support.

Preparation for transitioning out of detox is the final step. This may include enrolling in a long-term treatment program, case management services, or outpatient therapy.  These services help prevent relapse and support long-term sobriety.

Medications Used for Drug and Alcohol Detox

Although everyone receives a personalized treatment plan, here are some medications commonly used in detox programs.

  • Acamprosate is approved by the FDA and reduces your brain’s dependence on alcohol.
  • Antiadrenergic agents inhibit epinephrine and norepinephrine and include clonidine and propranolol. They are used to treat addiction to alcohol,
  • Antidepressants alleviate social anxiety, depression, and other forms of anxiety. However, these drugs can also correct chemical imbalances that cause behavior and mood changes. Examples include Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.
  • Antipsychotics may seem like a strange medication to use for drug and alcohol addiction. However, these medications, which also treat dementia, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric problems, can help alleviate anxiety and agitation during detox. Examples of these medications include Risperdal, Seroquel, Abilify, and Clozaril.
  • Methadone is commonly used to treat opioid addiction. It can help those going through a short-term detox avoid misusing opioids. It reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms by blocking signals in your brain.
  • Suboxone also treats opioid addiction treatment. It consists of two other drugs, buprenorphine and naloxone. It lessens withdrawal symptoms from heroin, Percocet or other opioids.

Again, these are just a few examples of medications used to help ease the pain of withdrawal symptoms during detox and recovery.

What Comes After Our Detox Program?

After detox, most clients go to a long-term recovery program. These programs combine psychiatric services and evidence-based mental health support for those recovering from addiction. Common treatment approaches include individual therapy, group therapy, medication services, case management, and holistic approaches.

Inpatient/Residential

Our residential treatment program provides long-term, around-the-clock care where you have access to a number of recovery resources.

Inpatient treatment programs include one-on-one therapy with licensed substance abuse counselors who can help you alter your thinking patterns and emotional reactions that drive substance abuse. You will also focus on building positive coping skills to manage stress and reduce relapse. Residential may also include an introduction to 12-step programs, family therapy, nutrition, and health education.

Outpatient

Not everyone can take time off of work or school to commit to a 24-hour residential program, but that shouldn’t be a barrier to receiving services. Outpatient treatment uses medication assistance, addiction counseling, support groups, and individual mental health therapy to help you recover from addiction.

We offer many of the same resources or therapies you would have access to in residential, but with the flexibility of returning home in the evening and attending to other obligations.

Alumni

Rehab alumni programs help you build a network to support your recovery after exiting treatment. Some well-known programs, such as AA and NA, provide spaces for recovering individuals to come together, share mutual understanding, and foster a sense of community. You might also maintain relationships with people you met in rehab, helping you stay focused on your recovery goals of commitment and accountability.
